*Trauma-Informed Leadership Training: A Needs-Based Approach & Parallel Process (2 days)
Community based mental health and child welfare agencies along with residential programs and treatment foster care, serve youth and families impacted by significant early adversity and inter-generational trauma. The resulting core issues with attachment, regulation learning and competency have a profound and widespread impact. The Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACE) research has clearly demonstrated the connection between early adversity and subsequent mental and physical issues. This is relevant in that it informs how we understand and intervene to assist youth and families. It is also relevant in that we now understand the ways in which staff may be negatively impacted by the work. The trauma informed workplace recognizes this and responds to the needs of employees to provide adequate supports and mitigate negative impacts. A trauma informed leadership recognizes that employees are also impacted by early experiences (implicit memory) which shape “core sensitivities”. Understanding issues such as “resistance” and “negativity” through a needs-based lens allows leadership to relate to staff in a supportive way which only enhances employee – management relationships. Organizations need to ensure that adequate support systems are in place to support frontline staff and prevent the negative consequences of not having such a structure (compassion fatigue, vicarious trauma, high turnover, absenteeism, disability).
